NO MONEY FOR THE WOMEN?

Chances are that a majority of you would not know who is Clayton Kershaw? How about Masahiro Tanaka? How about Jimmy Garoppolo?

All three are in the top 100 of the latest Forbes world’s highest paid athletes.

Names like Serena Williams, Sindhu Pusarla, Nicol David or even Danica Patrick or Ronda Rousey may sound familiar to many in this region.

None of these female sports stars are in the top 100 of the list. This will be the first time first time since the list was released that there will be no female sports stars in the top 100.

Not that, female athletes have been regular top money earners in the past years either.

Serena was the only female athlete to make the list last year. Despite making the list, her total income was almost half of that earned by the top male tennis star – Roger Federer.

Federer at #7 remains the most viable athlete for sponsors, with endorsement accounting for US$65 million of his USD77.2 million earnings.

While women have made great strides in sports, the disparity in earnings cannot be bridged in the new future.

The male dominated sports including basketball, baseball, football and American football still brings in huge amount of sports sponsorship and advertising compared to other more gender-centric sports.

One of the reasons for this is because of the perception that women sports does not appeal to most fans because of its lesser competitiveness and entertainment value.

With huge amount of money poured into the American based leagues, the latest top earners list is dominated by those playing

There is also a dearth of Asian stars in the list. Japanese Kei Nishikori with a total earning of USD34.6 million was ranked at #35.

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli was the next highest ranked Asian at #83.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather, who came out of retirement, was retained his place as the highest paid athlete in the world after earning USD285 million. The bulk of his pay came from his high-profile fight against Conor McGregor. Conor was placed fourth on the list with earnings of USD99 million.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi was named the second highest earner with pay of USD 111 million last year, with his Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo earning slightly less in 2018 with USD108 million.

Golfer Tiger Woods may not have been able to reproduce the form of his golden heydays, but he is still the highest earner from golf. Just USD 1.3 million of his total earnings of USD43.3 million came from winning tournaments. The rest were from endorsements.

While Tiger was ranked at #16, his fellow golfer, Phil Mickelson is the oldest player in the top 100 at #42.
