In 1973, Billy Jean King and Bobby Riggs faced off in a tennis game that became known as “The Battle of the Sexes”. King defeated the self-promoting Bobby Riggs, who was the world number one as an amateur in 1939 and later as a professional in 1946 and 1947. The 6–4, 6–3, 6–3 victory for King, was seen as a step forward in gender equality in sports.
